Indoor ranges. Blech.
When I first started shooting, it's all I knew. I'd go exclusively to indoor ranges. Since I'd never been to an outdoor range, I didn't know how different it could be.
I had occasion to go back to an indoor range recently, after not doing so for years.
The reasons I prefer outdoors all came back to me.
Lighting;
Indoors is always dark. It seems like no matter how you crank up the lights out by your target or how many you turn on in the whole place, it's just still dark. With old lady bifocaled eyes, that 50ft target might as well be 100 miles.
Air;
Face it. No matter how good the vent system is, it's not even comparable to the slightest breeze outdoors that will carry away the smokiness of whatever you're shooting. In an indoor range, it just sort of hangs there right by your face so you can keep shooting and keep breathing in all that leaded up smoke. Yuck.
Noise;
You're basically shooting in a concrete tunnel. With every shot you take, you not only hear it louder, you feel it. I use some pretty quality electronic earpro...indoors, they are little more than useless. I ended up doubling my hearing protection by putting foam plugs under my muffs. And that was for the lowly .22s. It's bad enough when you're alone... when there are others shooting in any of the other galleries, it's like they are right by your head. Go bigger than .22 and it's just flat out NOT FUN anymore.
Brass;
Every gallery has partitions. Your brass is going to ricochet. It will hit you in the head about 90% of the time. Don't even think it won't.
Expense;
I don't know what it is all over the country, but my outdoor range is $35 for the whole year. Plus, you can take a guest for free.
The indoor range is ten dollars an hour. And that's AFTER you buy the mandatory annual membership. There are no guest passes. If you have a friend from out of state shooting with you for only ONE time...they still have to pay for an annual membership, plus ten bucks an hour.
The only saving grace about indoor ranges is the ease with which you can find your brass and if you need to zero something, there's no crosswind to contend with factoring in.
All that being said, I'd rather shoot in an indoor range than not shoot at all.

O'Reilly is WRONG
You can not purchase a Class III firearm without paperwork.
He's wrong, and arrogant about it.
Trust me, if there was no tax stamp and subsequent waiving of any warrant-searches, I'd be the first one in line for a full auto, a suppressor, and an SBR shotgun!!
Here's the fail, see for yourself;

They're Getting Someone Locked Up
Man, the media makes me mad.
Today, some new laws for my state go into effect, one being that not only can you carry a loaded handgun on your person on your own private property (like always) now you can ALSO carry a loaded handgun on private property belonging to someone else, as long as you have permission of the owner. In addition, you no longer need a license to transport a handgun (provided it's unloaded and enclosed in a non-easily accessed place).
Up until this point, if you bought a handgun you could transport it (unloaded and cased) from the place you purchased it to your home or to and from a place of repair. But that's it.
Many gun owners who live in places where they don't have land to go shooting on were forced to pay for a license just to transport to a shooting range or to an NRA class or training.
This law makes it possible for people to participate in safety classes or just go plinking without paying a fee to the local police and to the state.
However, the Media is spinning it all wrong!! I can't tell you how many people have come into where I work and said that now anybody can carry without a license...because they heard it on the news! NOT TRUE!
If you do not have a license, you MUST have the handgun UNLOADED, CASED, and NOT easily accessed. You may load it when you get to the range, or to someone's private property (with their permission), but when you get ready to head home...UNLOAD it. CASE it. Put it where it's not easily accessed!
News anchors, journalists, editors of papers, and a host of other media types are irresponsibly reporting FALSE information and the well meaning law abiding gun owners are going to suffer! I'm not one that cries "Sue! Sue!", but in the case of someone going to jail, losing their guns, and creating a hardship on their families, I hope it will be possible to play back the broadcasts and place blame where it's due.
Be safe, Hoosiers. Check it out for yourselves here.

The Chatty Ones
Who are the most chatty people on earth?
COPS. That's who.
Seriously, coppers... "I have to go now" actually MEANS "I have to go now!"
It doesn't mean "but I'll stand here for 15 more minutes and chat about reloading"...
Even though that's exactly what I'll do because I don't want you to get your feelings hurt and follow me out to give me an ego induced TICKET.
If you're not Ponch or John, I'm not sticking around longer than I have to.
In fact, Ponch can take a hike too...

School Tells Boy "Take the Flag Off Your Bike"
What a friggen joke. Apparently, in California (well, that about says it all right there...) there's a 13 year old kid who has an American flag on his bicycle to show support for the veterans in his family. The school administrators said some other students complained....and you see where this is going, right?? You just have to see the insanity for yourself to believe it. (Click here for text and video)

Bullet Diameter Can Bite Your Butt.
Took the new batch of reloads to the range Saturday and they wouldn’t let the Rock go full battery.
At first I was sweating it because I thought I’d done something wrong when making them, but I followed my previous notes to the letter…so I didn’t know what it could be!
Then we tested them by sending them through Jay’s mag in his Kimber. They were fine.
Then my mag in Jay’s gun…still fine.
They also fed through my own Kimber in function check without a hitch.
We took them back to his house and pulled out the calipers and micrometer.
Using the barrel as a gauge, we discovered that the cases would not even seat, because the bullet was too big.
The ones that flew through just fine were .451.
The ones that would not let it go to full battery were .452.
It’s chambered really tight.
Pics:
A reload with a .451 bullet seated, using the barrel as a gauge;

A reload with a .452 bullet…not even close;

*UPDATE*
Sent the barrel to Armscor Precision Advanced Tactical (RIA) and they rechambered it not-so-tightly.
It eats everything like a champ now, just like the Kimber.
Great customer service, excellent communication, and FAST turn around time...
11 days total from the mail drop to having it back in my hands.

WHAT is on FIRE?!
So it's the last day of school for MiniMe and one of her friends came home with her today.
Here's the spillage by my front door that says "one extra kid after school".

They decided to do their hair and makeup and split to another friend's place for an impromptu pizza/video game party.
Anyhow, so they leave and I'm minding my own business surfing the net and doing laundry. All of the sudden I get a whiff of something that smells like it's kind of hot...sort of like a distant cheap candle. Then it got stronger, FAST.
I bolted out of the room and ran straight to Mini's room where I was nearly 90% certain I'd find a hair straightener plugged in and laying on the carpet or the bed.
Nerp.
The farther I back-tracked, I realized it was super strong the closer I got to the kitchen/dining room and the only two things that were running were a spankin' new dishwasher and a twenty-two year old dryer. I thought for sure the dryer was on fire.
That smell was the smell of hot wires burning.
I felt the door...no heat.
Opened it...no smell.
What...The...?!
I went to the dishwasher, which was running the "dry" cycle and I felt the front.
No hotter than "normal"...so I popped the latch and cracked the door.
I got hit with a lung-full of the most acrid stinky smoke (not steam...SMOKE) that I've ever smelled since a hairdryer caught on fire once when I was about 17. I REMEMBER that smell.
Anyhow...
INSIDE the washer, a little plastic lid had come unsecured and slipped through the top rack, through the bottom rack, and landed right smack on the heating element coil thingy.
Yargh!!
I reached in to pluck it off fast and the plastic got stringy like cheese.
The bottom rack rolled and bumped my hand and my thumb and index finger sizzled on that stupid thing right along with the lid.
Ouch.

igpay atinlay
I had to fill out a pre-registration packet for the MiniMe for the 2010-2011 school year.
Page after page after page of questions.
Finally, I got to the page about languages.
"What is the student's native tongue?"
"What language does the student have the best comprehension?"
"What language is spoken primarily in the home?"
"What language is the blah blah blah blah blah..."
I just couldn't take it...
So when I got to "What language does the student speak most often at home?", I wrote "English, or igpay atinlay!" and signed it!

The way our government trains people
If the vid on this page doesn't load for you, basically it's a woman with 15 kids (12 still in her charge).
Her "fiance" (the father of 10 of them) is in jail on coke charges. She blames social services for her problems because "the system failed to take care of her" (even though her rent and utilities were being paid by other organizations and food/clothes were donated from all around her community)...
and at the 2:18 time stamp she says - "Somebody needs to pay...for ALL MY CHILDREN. For my, and their, all our suffering and all our pain. Somebody needs to be held accountable...and they need to PAY."

Junk Science

Earth hour? "In a campaign initiated by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), more than 1 billion people from over 1,000 cities in 125 countries and territories around the world switched off their lights for one hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday."
I'm sorry, but this call to switch off everything for an hour is just stupid "feel good" warm fuzzies...It does nothing more than cause a power surge at 61 minutes when people power back up.
It's symbolic at best and hypocritical at worst.
I don't believe any of the big names supporting "conserving the earth" are doing anything more than getting their names in the media for some free P.R..
Remember Al Gore's "green example"?
How about Obama's statement “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,”...and then promptly jacked up his thermostat into the tropical zone?
Yeah, it's like that.
I'm not saying that people should be wasteful...in fact, the opposite. It's just good stewardship to take care of what you've been entrusted. My family recycles. Everything. (Some years back, the spousal unit built a recycling bin unit in our garage...cardboard, paper, tin, aluminum, plastics, glass. We use it daily.) We turn off lights when leaving a room, we we keep interior doors shut to not heat/cool unnecessary spaces, and we keep our thermostat set very modestly. Ask the Mini...she's always complaining :p
Seriously,though...this whole business about being earth-friendly for an hour to make a statement - it's doing more harm than good. What about all the appliances that have to run at maximum to play "catch up" when the power is flipped back on? Do people just *not* think?
Maybe Gore, Obama, and their biggest fan Michael Moore, should all get on their private jets and hop around to a zillion different places to make a movie promoting energy conservation.

Some Day, Someone Is Going To Bite It.
Some foggy, rainy, snowy, or otherwise low visibility day...or an icy slick day...
Some new driver or out-of-towner is really going to bite it if the other traffic thinks everyone sees all the stop signs at one particular 4-way stop.
There's a big tree just literally feet from a sign. You don't see it until you're right up on it. You have to know it's there to start slowing down, and it's at the bottom of a sloped street.
Here's what I mean (and sorry for the crappy camera pics - I pretty much wasn't aiming, just click, click, clicked...and hoped the sign/tree were in frame).
Here it is one street away:

Half way there, you don't see it at all:

If you know it's there, you can see the edge of the sign behind the tree
(Click on the pic to make it bigger...you'll see what I mean):

When you reach the corner property, you finally see it...but if you haven't already slowed down for it...

...then you're right on top of it.

The Month in Peace.
Islam. The “Religion of Peace”.
I’ve taken the time to compile just a few peaceful moments from the onslaught of happenings around the world each day so that you can enjoy a moment of the calm that must surely lie deep in the hearts of the most devout Muslims.
You can thank me later.
10/1 in Somalia; Islamists shell a vegetable market, killing civilians.
10/2 in Russia, Muslim gunmen kill a police officer in a drive-by while in Afghanistan, Taliban extremists attack a group of trucks, killing drivers.
10/3 in Pakistan, a group of Hindu men are abducted and murdered while a woman is beheaded in Iraq. Not to be outdone in Afghanistan, a peaceful Muslim masqueraded as a local soldier and murdered two American servicemen in their sleep.
10/4 a series of Jihad truck bombings killed drivers in Iraq while a woman was murdered in an “honor killing” not far away. In India, peaceful Muslim cops kill a Hindu boy for marrying a Muslim girl.
10/5 a 10-year-old boy is taken out by a bomb hidden in a garbage can in Iraq while just down the road, a half-dozen funeral mourners are blown to bits by a suicide bomber. Shortly after the funeral bombing, the tortured body of a Christian businessman is discovered after having been kidnapped by peaceful Muslim members.
10/6 in Afghanistan, a peaceful rocket aimed at a passenger bus, kills riders while a similar peaceful bus-bomb in Iraq explodes, too.
10/7 in Thailand, four civilians are killed in separate peaceful bombings while back in Afghanistan, bombers peacefully slay 4 cops.
10/8 in Kabul, Afghanistan, a suicide bomber detonates outside the Indian embassy, ending the lives of seventeen innocents while a similar peaceful explosion outside a shop in Iraq killed several shoppers.
10/9 in Somalia there were several peaceful shootouts resulting in many infidel deaths while hundreds are injured or burned to death from a suicide car bomber in a shopping plaza.
10/10 in Pakistan Muslims peacefully stormed a security headquarters, killing six officers in the siege taking a few hostages.
10/11 a hospital in Iraq is bombed while in Thailand a man drinking tea in a tea shop is gunned down in the name of peace…as was a cattle rancher in Thailand.
10/12 in the town of Abu Khamis, Iraq, the mayor was peacefully targeted, but they missed and took out his two sons.
10/13 in Iraq, an ambassador of peace detonates himself in a cafe, killing other patrons while another emissary in Afghanistan kills some American soldiers in the name of Allah (the god of peace?)
10/14 in Pakistan, a car peacefully plows into a crowd killing a dozen people when it blows up.
10/15 in Pakistan again, a little kid about 6 years old is blown apart by a remote-controlled car bomb along a city street.
10/16 in Iraq, a suicide bomber at a yell's 'Allah Akbar', then opens up with a machine-gun before detonating, leaving at least fifteen dead in the peaceful massacre.
10/17 in Somalia, a policeman is gunned down in an Islamist drive-by while a roadside bomb in Iraq killed members of a security detail.
10/18 in Iran, a peaceful demonstrator detonates in a gymnasium, slaughtering more than 50 people.
10/19 in Somalia a Christian woman is peacefully murdered inside her home for refusing to wear a veil.
10/20 in Pakistan, two suicide bombers attack a women's university peacefully blowing up several students and faculty.
10/21 over in the Philippines, a bomb is peacefully planted near a water pipe which kills an inspector.
10/22 in Somalia, peaceful Islamists mortar an airport, killing several.
10/23 in Iraq, more peaceful Islamists bomb a family in their vehicle, killing them.
10/24 in Pakistan, a bomb peacefully detonates on a minibus killing people in a wedding party.
10/25 in Iraq, car bombs take out a couple hundred people standing near or in government buildings. The dead include a bunch of kids at a day care center. It was a good day for peace.
10/26 in Thailand, dedicated peaceful Muslims gun down two Buddhist civilians looking for food.
10/27 in Pakistan, they attacked a police post, peacefully killing some cops.
10/28 in Afghanistan, there was a peaceful attack when Muslims peacefully forced their way into a UN guesthouse, murdering nine people, including six international workers…while here at home police are investigating the assault of a Detroit News photographer outside a mosque whose leader was killed during a shootout with FBI agents Wednesday. He’d told an informant if the FBI came to get him: "I'll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody."
10/29 A New York woman allegedly tried to slit her husband's throat because she said he wasn't the devout Muslim she thought she married five months ago. He was making her do horrible non-peaceful things (like eating pork, wearing short clothing and makeup…)
Today (10/30), I haven’t skimmed international news yet…but the day is young. I’m sure peace will break out in several places before long.

Misinformation and Race Baiting
First the original video in which a semi-auto (AR 15) is called a "machine gun".
Folks, there's nothing fully automatic about an AR.
Let's also point out that the nomenclature "assault weapon" is completely wrong.
It's just like the word "racism"...it's tossed about, but no one accurately defines what it is.
Next, the wonderful job of editing out the black guy, making the event seem racially motivated (cutting to the picture of a white guy) and making the statement: "here you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped on them."
Yeah...that's not race baiting, MSNBC. Losers.

I wish my phone had missiles.
The other night (or rather the other EARLY morning) just before 3:30AM, our phone rang. You know that ring...the one that makes you jump out of a dead sleep with your adrenaline pumping wondering who died.
We're in the habit of letting the machine pick up for at least the first few words (we don't have caller I.D. on the land line).
It was some girl who sounded half baked and had one of those Valley Girl type accents. She said "like" a lot and pronounced "know" as "new", etc.
Our machine doesn't cut off after a given time, so I ended up getting up to pick up the phone to tell her she had the wrong number, or else she might still be rambling.
Here's the call as transcribed from my machine that caught it all:
Her: Ummm. Hello. This is for my "Dave's Friend" and my name is Tanya. I don't know you from like Adam, but I've heard your name while I was at Dave's house and like...I know you a little bit. I met you a few times and I need to get a hold of Dave...and I was like wondering if you could like help me...but I see you're not home right now, but like...
This is where I picked up the phone and said, "We ARE home right now because it's three thirty in the morning and we're sleeping and we don't know any "Dave". You've got the wrong number.
As if it would change whether or not I knew "Dave", whether or not it was "three thirty A.M.", or whether or not the phone ringing in the dead of the night gave me a coronary, she actually said, "Oh. Well...I really need to get a hold of Dave if you can like help me..."
I said, "Listen. You have. The wrong. Number."
She says "Oh, I'm sorry...I just need to get a message to him, that's all."
I said, "We don't know ANY "Dave". It's 3:30. You have the wrong number. Don't hit "redial". Bye." And I hung up.
Now you might think this was just a random wrong number, but unfortunately "Tanya" has our number written down somewhere and over the last few years she dials it when she gets half baked. Sometimes she calls and leaves messages about being bored. Sometimes she offers to share pot and hang out. Sometimes she leaves naughty messages for Jason. I wonder if Jason knows she's looking for Dave at three thirty in the morning...

Are they fricken KIDDING ME???
So there's a chick that lives about half an hour away who was looking to get her hands on a Kimber Ultra Carry II, just to try it for herself and see if she wanted to pursue looking for one to buy. I told her if she could meet me at a range that I'm a member of, she was welcomed to try my 1911.
She and her hubby showed up.
Upon showing my Kimber to a her, two men inserted themselves into the conversation. They are both board members of that range and they are also both NRA certified instructors.
The first came over and started saying a few things that made me wonder if he was for or against Kimber. I really couldn’t tell at first. The second guy definitely was steering this gal away from thinking of a Kimber and even though aversion to recoil was mentioned, he started pointing her toward thinking about a lighter weighted smaller framed 9mm!
After the girl and her hubby left, the first guy said, "Man, I sure hope I talked her out of a Kimber!"
I said, "Why??"
He said, "Because 1911s are too complicated for women to shoot."
And the other guy said, "No woman should carry a semi auto. I always steer them to revolvers because they are idiot proof."
After a quick mental inventory to verify, I confirmed to myself that I was indeed a member of the gender in question.
O.M.effin' G! I wanted to inflict immeasurable pain with a Taco Bell spork.
Anyhow, I sent an "I'm sorry about those two guys" to the people who wanted to check out the Kimber before buying one and I told them that the only opinion that counts is hers and if she’s comfortable with the feel/fit and comfortable with the push (recoil) of the .45 then that’s the only thing worth listening to.
You can’t tell other people what shoes will fit them best, they have to try them out and walk around in them to see for themselves. We’re all different.
Chicks, you don’t need a revolver because it’s “idiot proof” and 1911 styles are not "too complicated for women".
Guys, please tell your chicks that^.
