RIA Update

Remember my barrel troubles here?
UPDATE:
Sent the barrel back on November 1st. It came back home in today's mail.
They assessed it, rechambered it, it passed the go/no go gauge, and they said that there have been a few with the same issues coming back... so they ARE aware of it and are making efforts to QC them better so tightly chambered ones aren't going out the door.
Sounds like mine was reamed on a day that the tooling was getting worn.

New tooling, rechambering, a polished feed ramp, and a quick turnaround in the mail.
Function checked my .452 reloads and it's feeding them like a champ. Decided to run to the range before dark and test fire.
All my .452s sailed through and went "BANG" at the appropriate times.
I'm calling it "fixed".

Glad to hear you got that fixed. I hand load for my S&W 4506, and so far, I've always ordered the .451 bullets. Always wondered would might happen if I have accidently ordered that bullets in .452? Didn't think it would cause a feeding issue, but you never know. And I've not miked the chamber yet to see if there'd be any feeding issues. Thanks for sharing your bullet size experience :).

No problem.
Sometime if you get your hands on just a few .452, it'd be interesting to see... If you do try it, make sure you post back here. Even if it's a long way off, my email alerts me to new comments on old entries, too.
I'd be curious to know!

Glad you got your RIA back. Missing you at the monkey page.

Pics of the diminutive Jetty are great. The family that shoots together, stays together.

Be good. . . or good at it.

Hey Annie, I "measured" my barrel and it's like .4505 so I think the .452's might be a bit beeg for mine. However, I haven't had any feeding problems with .451's. Need to talk to my one range buddy who hand loads for his 45 Long Colt and see what he does size wise for his 45's. He recently had some reaming done on one of his SAA cyclinders. I'll have him refresh my memory regarding this and bullet sizes, plus get back to you so you can have some info for working with your 45 :).

Hi Annie,

According to one of my range buddies who hand loads a lot for his various 45's the .45 ACP usually has a bore of .445 inch and a groove of .451, so .451 jacketed bullets are usually the right ticket. What's found on the market with jacketed .45 ACP rounds is that the standard diameter is .451 inch. But when you shoot cast bullets, the rules can change. If you use hard cast bullets, lubed and/or with a gas check, you might want to use the .451 size in most handguns. But generally you move to a larger size, since lead will deform a bit, unlike the jacketed rounds. And you want the bullet to expand fill the grooves and makes a seal so that leading is not an issue. Now, we move to a SOFTER but heavier bullet at MV's around 900 fps for hunting big critters (outside of California's Condor Zone). Its large, relatively soft bullet should penetrate deeply, while the lead can be squeezed down into my barrel.

This makes sense to me and hope this helps with your 45 reloading. With the FMJ's, I gonna stick with the .451's. Should I ever load some lead bullets I might then try some .452's. I shoot leaded bullets in my 32 S&W Long wheel gun but hate cleaning the lead out of it so will probably stick with jacketed bullets in my 45 ACP :).

Hope this helps, Kevin

Thanks, TechDir/Kevin!
I pretty much use .452 with a thin plating. They're just a tad thinner than Berry bullets...made by a company called Zero and distributed by Roze. Is your range buddy familiar with them?

Hi Annie, regarding the Zero bullets, my one range buddy has not yet used them but mentioned thta he has never seen any negative comments about them. He mentioned that if you purchase them via their site your minimum size order is like 1000. Both he and I buy in lots of 500. He like Hornady and I buy Remington. So those Zero bullets are good stuff and they've alright for you, yes?

Hope this helps, Kevin

Yep. I've used them before, but in ammo reloaded by my instructor.
I buy bullets by the 1000, so Roze Distribution's "minimum quantity" is not a problem.
