Five hours of So Much Fun!!
I loved shooting trap!! It took me awhile to get the hang of it because it’s vastly different than plinking with a rifle. I’m pretty sure that I was told at least a dozen times to stop aiming and trying to sight it like a target, but man that’s a hard thing to break!!
My first attempt was a practice round of 25 at 16 yards. I got 5 out of 25. But near the end I was figuring it out. It was an incredibly windy day, and there was much said about that from the veteran shooters. I figured it would probably be good to learn the hard way first, then from here on out it would be easier. The very first one I hit, I hit square on and that thing shattered to smithereens! What a rush! The guy who was instructing me picked up the empty shell and hung on to it, and then gave it to me at the end of the practice. I felt kind of bad that I was keeping him from shooting, but he said he was glad to skip it to help a new shooter and that’s what it was all about. I thanked him for letting me use his gun (a Beretta 12 gauge) and he told me that it was a gun that his son had won many championships with before he died, and that his son would be happy that someone was learning trap with it. Wow, talk about “paying it forward”…
Then on to the serious rounds… 2 rounds of 25 at 19 yards. My final score was 31 out of 50 which must not have been too shabby. I won two prizes; a cleaning kit and a pair of purplish shooter glasses that make orange clays stand out from green tree background.
It was a really good time and I plan on doing it more often!
JL took me for pizza after, and I’m pretty sure he’s proud of my first attempt. He took pictures the whole time, so here are a few:
Here’s me and my instructor Max on the far right. Max is the one without a ponytail.

This is during my shot, I’m just past the guy wearing shorts and Max is behind me:

This was after a rotation that put me in the middle. Max is checking to see how I’m leading the shot. That little kid in blue was the one pushing the button when we called “pull”.

My least favorite part was hearing “LOSS!!” when I missed. It got to the point that I could tell as soon as I squeezed the trigger whether or not that clay was gonna break.
My shoulder is kind of bruised and my cheek might be, too…but that’s a bragging right!
And it feels great!

Hate to say it ...wait for it ...you *know* whats coming ...
I - Told - you - So !
Good to hear that you done good and enjoyed Trap.
Woohoo! Way to go! Pretty darn good shooting for the first time out but... we gotta remember who we're talking about here :)
I remember my first time... "No, it's not about learning to shoot a shotgun. It's about learning to shoot moving targets. Now start leading them instead of trying to aim at them. And if you keep stopping the gun, you'll keep missing! And, dagnabit -- if you're gonna miss, at least miss it out front!"
Yep, you're gonna enjoy this new sport! It's getting so close to that elusive "25" that keeps you coming back.
I don't know if I want to hit 25... they shoot your hat! I like my hat! LOL :D
Glad you had fun! Sorry I couldn't participate but I enjoyed watching you have fun and I am always proud of you. As many have said, pictures are worth a thousand words and the picture of your smile when you smashed the target was priceless.
