Shootin' with the Fam

Today we took the nephew to the range and for the first time in a long time, there was somebody else there.
Here's a little insight into the type of people that comprise the shooting culture:
I walked downhill to the guy that was there and asked how long he'd been there. He said he'd just gotten set up and asked why.
I told him that we'd brought a new shooter who had to wrangle a babysitter just to come out there for an hour or so and that guy gladly packed everything back up and said he'd come back and was glad that a new shooter was able to come and try what it's all about. I thanked him profusely (and repeatedly) and offered to help him carry some of his bags and boxes when he started making trips to his truck (he'd clearly come for the day).
NICE PEOPLE. The world needs more.

Anyhow, I set up the Jammit Stand and stapled some of my very expensive targets to it.
We went through the safety rules and some of the stuff we'd been discussing (terminology and what ifs)...
We worked on grip and stance mostly.

He got the hang of a decent grip, but kept slipping out of it.
When he did it, it was spot on good shootin'.

Stance was easier to reinforce. As soon as he opened his stance and leaned forward, he realized how much better he did. That'll stick for sure.

I think he surprised himself hitting the bullseye.

If he keeps it all up and practices, practices, practices...he'll hit it more times than not.
He's a really good listener who didn't bring an ego to fudge up a good thing.
Awesome kid.

All in all, good job, Kiddo.
Here's to many more days o' shootin'

Good job, Annie's Nephew!

Dang girl, why can't the range accommodate more than one group of shooters? That really makes it tough, I'll spoiled with my clubs,18genera purpose 50/100 yard, 25 pistol lanes at 25/50 yards and 20 long range at 100/200 and 300 yards. Glad it worked out and everyone had fun, you owe that guy a box of "good donuts".

G-Man, That place is TINY. One berm, two trap boxes. That's it. No benches, no cover/shelters, not even a potty. :p
But...it's the only game in town, and by "in town" I mean "within an hour and a half's drive". Plus, it's $30 bucks a year instead of hundreds like some places.
And yeah, I'll have to ask him if he's a Krispy Kreme fan! lol

Girl I said "good" donuts, didn't I teach you anything, lol. At least get him some fresh ones, make sure the lights on.:-)

OK, G-Man...I'm sending him to your house. I'm gonna need your GPS coordinates.
And NWBob, I wouldn't know how good Voodoo donuts are... SOMEbody keeps forgetting to get me any!

Shooters are by in large more eager to help someone jump into their hobby. It's not something you see much in any other sport or past time. But you know the saying, "An armed society is a POLITE society." That generally carries over into other areas (like sharing a range).
Your nephew looks like he's been taught a good stance. Good for you.
Keep up the good work and hope you have many more chances to help him learn even more.
Tell him to remember "shooters pay it forward".

My how our JetGirl has grown. From teaching a daughter to teaching a fireman (if that's what that shirt says. I clicked to make it bigger and clicked at photobucket to make it bigger).
And wow, JG, your hair is really blonde! Somehow I thought it was red.

Someone, I like that Heinlein quote, too. It's true!

RFC 22Shooter, I'll have to ask about the shirt. And my hair looks red in some light, too! :p

Im just here said...

Those shoot n c stickers are nice to shot at. Lets you know right where you hit. Nice job on that center of the plate one, new shooter.

Jet, I kinda pegged you for a Heinlein reader.
You're a libertarian, right?

Annie said...

RFC 22 shooter,
I'm sort of either a conservatively leaning libertarian, or a libertarianly leaning conservative.
But I really don't put much stock in "labels".
I'm just a Midwest suburban mom who thinks the Constitution and our freedoms are important...and without the right to bear arms, all the rest will fall.
FWIW, my 2¢

JayDiddy, let me know how you like that! I've never been to an Appleseed shoot, but I've been eyeballing a couple! lol
I think MiniJet would like it. She's more into rifle shooting whereas I'm a handgunner at heart.
