So there's a chick that lives about half an hour away who was looking to get her hands on a Kimber Ultra Carry II, just to try it for herself and see if she wanted to pursue looking for one to buy. I told her if she could meet me at a range that I'm a member of, she was welcomed to try my 1911.
She and her hubby showed up.
Upon showing my Kimber to a her, two men inserted themselves into the conversation. They are both board members of that range and they are also both NRA certified instructors.
The first came over and started saying a few things that made me wonder if he was for or against Kimber. I really couldn’t tell at first. The second guy definitely was steering this gal away from thinking of a Kimber and even though aversion to recoil was mentioned, he started pointing her toward thinking about a lighter weighted smaller framed 9mm!
After the girl and her hubby left, the first guy said, "Man, I sure hope I talked her out of a Kimber!"
I said, "Why??"
He said, "Because 1911s are too complicated for women to shoot."
And the other guy said, "No woman should carry a semi auto. I always steer them to revolvers because they are idiot proof."
After a quick mental inventory to verify, I confirmed to myself that I was indeed a member of the gender in question.
O.M.effin' G! I wanted to inflict immeasurable pain with a Taco Bell spork.
Anyhow, I sent an "I'm sorry about those two guys" to the people who wanted to check out the Kimber before buying one and I told them that the only opinion that counts is hers and if she’s comfortable with the feel/fit and comfortable with the push (recoil) of the .45 then that’s the only thing worth listening to.
You can’t tell other people what shoes will fit them best, they have to try them out and walk around in them to see for themselves. We’re all different.
Chicks, you don’t need a revolver because it’s “idiot proof” and 1911 styles are not "too complicated for women".
Guys, please tell your chicks that^.

Annie - you've started to write fiction, right? OMG is all I can say.
Nope...no fiction, RW.
Just a couple of "Good ol' boyz" who need an uncomplicated *whap* upside the head.
Now, now, little lady. Come here and let me pat you fondly on the head as I tell you not to worry your pretty little head about things that men do. Darn, that even sounds bad to me. The "whap" you mentioned might be the best route after all.

Hits count and even though *you've* proven the ability to make good hits with "any other weapon" -the dedication required to do so leans to a single action auto as the easier/better choice for *most* others as far as operation and first shot hit probability. Snubs *are* tough to learn accuracy with but can be done *with practice* Imnsho anyway.
Should add that smaller lighter framed 9mm could also fall into the "snub" category(shouldve clarified that earlier) ...now did the interested party in the Kimber get a chance to sample the wares of the 1911 platform or was it a fondle-infomercial? Possibly invite her out for another unmediated range session? Too bad the pm9 went away you couldve proved 3 points at once :)

Don't know if we'll hook up again for that.
I'll probably not see her until October's gun show in her town.
not that it would mean anything but... "they are also both NRA certified instructors"... doesn't the NRA support women shooters also? Would a letter (campaign?) to the NRA maybe force their hand to re-educate their own "prestigious" instructors? Just a thought I hadn't seen anyone mention.
Yeah, my instructor told me to get their certification ID's and complain. Don't know when I'll see them again, but if I do...I will.
Pigs will be pigs and I don't pretend to be a handgun expert but here's my 2¢.
The women I have taken out to shoot a handgun for the first time (total of 5) tend to shy away from the .40 and prefer the .380 (I only own the two) strictly by appearance.
I believe shooting high power for the first time could turn off both male and female newbies no mater how small the piece looks.
As a ten year old kid I was first exposed to a .177 pellet rifle followed by a .22. A year or so later my grandad allowed me to try his .410 shotgun before I got to touch the 16 ga., and so on..
A first timer's choice should be made based on a phased approach, supervised instruction, self preference and experience not another person's opinion, recommendation or gun appearance and caliber.
JMHO : )
She's not a first timer. They didn't know that because:
1) they weren't initially part of the conversation
2) they didn't ask (once they inserted themselves and took over)
3) they completely stereotyped her from looks.
She carries a CZ P-01 (9mm). She wants to get away from the recoil of a 9mm (among other defensive shooting reasons). After researching different things and seeing the Ultra Carry II online, she wanted to get one in hand before dropping nearly a grand on it.
If they'd have shut up for two seconds and let her speak, maybe they wouldn't have told her she could take their class right away and start off with airsoft.
I never said "looking for a first time gun"...I said, "looking to get her hands on a Kimber Ultra Carry II, just to try it for herself before pursuing a purchase."
ROFLMAO. So women are idiots? Did either of these guys realize they'd stuffed both feet in their mouths AND completely shot their credibility?
Something tells me, "no, they did not realize that"...
hi annie,
just read about your friend wanting to check out a kimber, and the two doofuses who stuck their noses in. the m1911 is "too complicated for a woman..." REALLY? while as you know i started my wife on a llama .22 because the controls were the same as my m1911a1, just scaled down, she graduated to a llame .380 and stayed with it, feeling that the full sized .45 was a bit much for her. my daughter started with the .45 and learned on it, then went to a 9mm govt. model for its more comfortable recoil, neither of them found the m1911a1 "too complicated for a woman". i have just a few words for those morons, "STFU" and "MYOB". the m1911a1 is just another gun and it doesn't care about gender. if your friend likes the kimber and feels comfortable with it tell her this old .45 shooter says "go for it!"
As a Certifie NRA instructor for handguns CC and self defense, I'd like to apologize for NRA instructors everywhere, since the two "idiots" mentioned here have their feet in their mouths and may not be able to speak...
I'm a 63 year old woman, only 5 feet tall. I teach people to shoot all kinds of handguns and can shoot most of them quite well. I carry an XD .45 compact myself, and certainly don't find it too complicated or difficult to control, even with small hands.
One of the most exacting of my roles as an instructor sometimes is to help both newcomers and experienced shooters choose the gun that is right for them. Helping them match their unique needs, carry style and physical attributes to the right gun is enough of a challenge without getting either stereotypes or my personal opinion involved - or any more than is humanly possible anyway. :)
But I'd love to see justice administered to these bozos. How about a shooting match? They'd have to eat their words if they saw the shooting done by my women students, past and present. :) I'll bet you can find plenty of good shooters where you are too!
