UnFreakingBelievable

MiniMe respectfully went to her school’s administrative people and asked permission to wear a specific shirt to school. She spent some time making sure she was within her “freedom of speech” rights as well as a couple other things in order to be the counter voice to avid pro-Obama propaganda her classmates were wearing.
The front of the shirt she made herself says “Stimulus Package is an ObamaNation” and the back says “Bring Back the Gold Standard”.
Now you might think that I’d be writing this blog entry about the hassles she may have encountered for it from liberal faculty/staff, or maybe jeering from the ObamaLuv kid crowd.
That may well happen, but she didn’t get to wear it today because school was canceled due to a heavy thick fog that never lifted. At some point when she wears it (probably next week), I’ll blog it with a pic of the shirt.
What I’m actually writing about is her encounter with her Media Communications teacher in her Journalism class.
Hold on to something…
Here it comes:
My 15 year old kid had to explain to a 40-something year old TEACHER what the Gold Standard was!!
Holy freakin’ moly! The future is doomed.

I am not as surprised as you that the teacher didn't know what the gold standard is. Try the Dredd-Scott Decision or the War of 1812. Bet you will get an empty look as well.

But how about the ERA amendment or the battle for civil rights, you know, pet leftist projects...of course the teacher will know all about those.

As far as the gold standard goes, that is never going to happen again, hate to say it.

Easy way to explain it:

"You know that thing we prosecute people for, where they print money on color copiers? What do they call it? Counterfeiting?

That's what the federal government is doing to money measured in gold. Advocating for a return to the gold standard is advocating that the government stop counterfeiting."

Frankly, I'm blown away by the fact Mini-Me can wear what she chooses to school. I can't think of a district off the top of my head that allows kids to wear anything but the cough uniform cough "standardized dress". But that is the difference between the midwest and the rest of us.

There was an incident locally where kids were forbidden from wearing hats, having bumper stickers with, etc the logo of a local radio station. Why? The station is KIKK Kikker (country) music. And since white people listen to kikker music and there are three K's in the logo, it was declared a "hate" symbol. Heck, lots of different primary colors, numbers, frankly any sports team logo is a banned item in my district as they may be gang related. Seriously.

As for Mini-Me, have her take an extra shirt to school just in case. That way she can make her point by expressing her rights but won't loose a day of instruction doing so. You may also have her wait until May 1st to do it since it's after Black History Month and would be something she could use in her defense if the school wants to get pissy. Stupid, yes. Silly, yes. Ridiculous, yes.
Oh, also there has been a good bit of case law behind the schools right to be stupid and arbitrary when it comes to these rules. They are in loco parentis and your kids leave most of their rights at the door sorry to say.

I for one wish her luck.

Oh, the reason the teacher didn't know about the gold standard is probably the myopia a lot of teachers develop. They get so focused on teaching their course they literally forget about other subjects. Kinda like doctors I used to deal with as a broker. It seemed the more expert they were in their field, the less of a clue they had in business matters. Kinda like the old saying about people going on to their PhD's: they know more and more about less and less.

Oh, I'd also add that outside of people who are really interested in economics, most people have no idea what the gold standard is much less being able to describe how fiat currency functions.
