Asinine

Not too long ago, there was a "gun fair" where people could sign up to have a certified instructor helping them shoot firearms that were maybe new or unfamiliar to them. Sadly, a nine year old boy lost control of a fully automatic weapon and the recoil/muzzle flip sharply turned the gun to point at himself and while he reflexively grabbed harder, that action made him keep squeezing the trigger...and he fatally shot himself.
A horrible and quite preventable tragedy.
To add more "horrible and preventable" on top of that, the outcome appears to be that the people who loaned their guns out that day to share with people who wanted to try something different, are being charged. CRIMINALLY charged.
Two men who brought the automatic weapon to the show, Carl Guiffre of Hartford, Conn., and Domenico Spano, of New Milford, Conn., also were indicted.
An involuntary manslaughter conviction carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and $1,000 fine. The term could be five years or less for someone with no prior convictions.

How many law abiding safe acting gun owners have shared their belongings with newbies? How many of us have let someone else shoot our guns so they could get a feel for what they like or don't like...especially if they were shopping around and about to spend a big chunk of money on a firearm?
If this goes down, it sets a precedent that says if you let someone shoot your guns and they have a negligent discharge, YOU could be going to PRISON.

Massachusetts law in the aftermath of the Coconut Grove fire made it clear that manslaughter charges could arise from gross negligence. I use general terms here. Negligent entrustment of that which is dangerous likewise can lead to criminal charges. The lessons for us are clear. Where the line is drawn isn't clear, and always evolving. Use your head. Be safe.
