PLINK!

Today was a day that was a long time brewing. For the last year I’ve been trying to surreptitiously involve the whole family in shooting so that I’d have some “built in” shooting buddies no matter where I turned. The main focus of my devious plan was to involve MiniMe so that not only would we have something fun in common, but it would give her confidence about herself in a way that only shooting well does. She’s been fighting me about it tooth and nail for over a year. When I’d bring up the fact that she does so well with a recurve, all I’d hear is “that’s different”.
A year ago she was shooting consecutive bullseye hits without so much as trying.

Somewhere along the way, she’s picked up society’s slant on gun opinions. TV, school, newspapers, friends, wherever.
It was quite a hill to conquer… but I slowly did. Starting little by little with the airsoft pistols and moving the target box further and further…
Today was the day! Her first time EVER shooting anything other than the recurve or the airsofts.
I thought I was in for it at first because all I heard was, “There are bugs. It’s hot. These earplugs feel weird. There are bugs. My ponytail holder broke. The sun is in my eyes. Something smells funny. There are bugs.”
Contrary to popular advice, I did *not* make it super easy at first. In fact, I didn’t make it easy at all because I knew she could do it. We used one of Remington’s 2 inch diameter spinners and moved well past the 50 yard marker. We used no rests, no scopes, no slings… just iron sights and off hand standing.
Her first shot hit the frame.

Her second spun that reactive target like a tornado hit it.

Then she hit it again.
Hot dang!
She loved it!
Now she wants her own rifle that fits her better.
I’m so giddy about it, I don’t know what to do with myself!

You know it! I'm already scouting out lighter rifles with shorter overall lengths. I know there's at least one CZ scout at the store/range (if it's still there), so we might go try that on for size! ;-)

I seem to remember a brand with a 'stock trade up' deal. Buy a youth model now and when they grow out of it they'll allow the youth stock as trade on an adult stock. Thinking it's Dakota Arms - gotta pay big $ for that kind of stuff though . If you go with a CZ Scout , see if you can order a full size stock as part of the package . It may cost a few dollars now - but will be cheaper than good wood in a few years . just sayin .
