Blast from my sugared up past...

So I'm in the grocery store and I'm thinkin' I want to grab a bottle of water out of one of those little mini-fridge deals by the check out lane. Once I'm up there, one of those "Mt. Dew Throwback" bottles caught my eye. I heard about them a little while back, but never tried one. I decided to give it a shot since they were supposed to taste just like they did when I was a kid.
I also grabbed a snack bag of Hot Fries, thinking that if I was going to revisit my past, I better "go big, or go home!"
Once inside my van with the engine running, I popped open the bag and took a sniff. I've always loved those stupid things! Then I twisted off the cap of the pop bottle and took a sip. OMG. It really DID taste different! I'd go so far as to say "better"!
I'm sitting there being kind of nostalgic over a snack (hey, don't judge me) and I flipped on the radio...only to be met with Don Henley singing one of my favorite songs from that era - Dirty Laundry <--Click to hear it

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry

Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around

We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry

Welcome to 1983. Again.

Sometimes you just have to sit back and wonder, "Good gawd, WHY?"

Michael Jackson's iconic 1983 music video "Thriller" may become a stage musical. The theater producer Nederlander Organization officially announced Monday that it has acquired the rights to the video and plans to turn it into a Broadway show.
Rumors of the project first surfaced last fall on New York gossip pages. And because the Nederlander Organization controls Broadway in Chicago, such a project could have a pre-Broadway debut in Chicago.
"Could be," said James L. Nederlander, the coy lead producer, on Monday morning. "I'd like to."
To come to Chicago, after all, Nederlander would mostly have to do a deal just with himself. "We have a lot of disagreements," he said, "me, myself and I."
"Thriller," which has yet to acquire the rest of its creative team, will be at least a couple of years away. But Nederlander said that Jackson would be personally and fully involved in the creation of the show.
Don't get me wrong, I owned the album...in fact, a copy still sits in a closet in a catch-all room in my home. When the movie 13 Going on 30 came out, I dusted off the ol' Thriller moves to impress my kid, just like a lot of other dorky moms probably did.
But this? A Broadway musical? Why?
Why why why?

Oh...I know...

Friday's Journey

My kid is completely enchanted by all things "80's", and at the top of her list is one of my favorite bands: Journey.
Here's one of my favorite Journey songs that she got hooked on from an episode of "Scrubs". Rock on, MiniMe.

A "Way Back" Machine Memory

Today it was a really windy cooler day, but bright and sunny. We decided to wash the truck, the van and the car in the driveway instead of driving them to the car wash. While we were out there, car after car kept parking at the curb and people kept going into the neighbor's house across the street. JL thought it must be some kind of party, but nobody was outside on the deck, around their pool, or in the yard. I thought about it for a second and said, "Prom."
Sure enough, before we were finished, two kids came out surrounded by a small group of picture snappers. She had a long shimmering royal blue dress on and the requisite "up do" hairstyle. He had on a black tux with a blue tie and cumber bun that matched the dress.
It sort of made me think about my own prom. I didn't have a blast like people seem to think it should be. I thought it was stressful and really would have rather been just cruising or something. In fact, the next weekend after prom, there was a huge tailgate party down at a place on the riverbank that was a notorious spot for mudding, camping, or just hanging out. WAY more fun. If I had a "do-over", I'd have probably chosen to skip the prom completely and ditch the dress for jeans and head to the river. It never mattered when you went, you always saw someone you knew and you rarely ever rode in the same truck twice when the games began. Then after all the engines revved and the mud was slung, the trucks would be pulled into the shallow bank and everybody would lend a hand washing them off and pulling weeds out of the wheel wells. Usually, huge water fights would ensue and someone would inevitably lose their keys in the river.
I don't know if the neighbor kid will have a good time at her prom or not. Maybe that's her thing, and if so I hope she does. It just wasn't mine.

Welcome to my playground...

I like a lot of different musical era's, but my heart is in the 80's.
Forgive the "grainy" texture of YouTube...

How many lyrics to how many songs did YOU know? :D
