Earth hour? "In a campaign initiated by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), more than 1 billion people from over 1,000 cities in 125 countries and territories around the world switched off their lights for one hour between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday."
I'm sorry, but this call to switch off everything for an hour is just stupid "feel good" warm fuzzies...It does nothing more than cause a power surge at 61 minutes when people power back up.
It's symbolic at best and hypocritical at worst.
I don't believe any of the big names supporting "conserving the earth" are doing anything more than getting their names in the media for some free P.R..
Remember Al Gore's "green example"?
How about Obama's statement “We can’t drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times … and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK,”...and then promptly jacked up his thermostat into the tropical zone?
Yeah, it's like that.
I'm not saying that people should be wasteful...in fact, the opposite. It's just good stewardship to take care of what you've been entrusted. My family recycles. Everything. (Some years back, the spousal unit built a recycling bin unit in our garage...cardboard, paper, tin, aluminum, plastics, glass. We use it daily.) We turn off lights when leaving a room, we we keep interior doors shut to not heat/cool unnecessary spaces, and we keep our thermostat set very modestly. Ask the Mini...she's always complaining :p
Seriously,though...this whole business about being earth-friendly for an hour to make a statement - it's doing more harm than good. What about all the appliances that have to run at maximum to play "catch up" when the power is flipped back on? Do people just *not* think?
Maybe Gore, Obama, and their biggest fan Michael Moore, should all get on their private jets and hop around to a zillion different places to make a movie promoting energy conservation.

That's the thing Annie.
People DON'T think.
Sheeple do as they are told.
CFLs are NOT better for the environment.
Your precious Prius is NOT better for mother earth.
You see what you want to see, and you hear what you want to hear.
Doesn't make it so.
The last paragraph hit it.
I just can't listen to anything anyone says on this issue besides Ed Begley because he WALKS THE WALK.
As soon as Algore starts to live modestly instead of in a castle that costs more to climate control than eleventy normal houses, he won't have an audience with me. Nor will any of the rest of these politicians and/or clebrities whose carbon assprints are as big as the Goodyear Friecking Blimp with their limos, private jets, etc.
I meant unless Algore...it's early.
I've recycled for years - long before it was fashionable and not for the fame and not because TPTB told me I had to.
I didn't know about this particular "lights out". But with the last one, I turned on every single light in the house. That included those inside a closet with no exterior windows.
I'm with Dan. When Gore uses as little energy as I do, I'll start listening.
Oops forgot my name. I suppose too paranoid about the black energy helicopters finding me ;-)
Earth Hour. Now that's the spirit. I'll drink to this...

Global warming. It's a marketing hoax. Follow the money.
Like another posting here- I recycled long before it was in fashion, when it hit mainstream Phoooey!
I can hypermile a gas powered auto with a fart can and a cold air intake and get better mileage than *most* hybrid drivers- and do it regularly in a car that cost $800 w/185k on it. Point being, I prayed for the power jolt when everyone flicked the switch on- just to laugh at the greenies - even flicking my switches on and off...hoping...but it didn't happen and that just ain't right. I was disappointed.
