Cold Rain & Hot Lead

It was a balmy 43 degrees Fahrenheit today with a steady mix of drizzle and outright rain. The nephew braved it on his Goldwing to get to my house before 9:00am this morning and we hopped in my van with a range bag full of stuff to make a trip to a DNR range about an hour away. The rain was supposed to break by noon...but it didn't.

We pulled into the range and waited just a little bit for Jay and one of his friends to show up. They'd each brought some toys for the new shooter to test out.
I even stapled up some very expensive targets...you know the kind. ;)

Jay worked with him a bit on his grip and stance and the targets were out at about the 30 ft mark. It's the first time the nephew has been to a formal range and it can be intimidating at first...but he picked right up on how things went. To top it off, he shot very well; especially after Jay would tweak his stance here or there.

One of the best parts was every time Jay put a different gun in his hands, at that first trigger pull he'd get all wide eyed and say "WOW!!" It was like Christmas (and almost as cold! :p )

We broke for lunch around noon-thirty and packed up all the stuff in my van to go to lunch. I expected a bunch of "women driver" quips, but they were fairly nice to me...maybe because I threatened to make them all walk. Heh.

We had lunch at a little restaurant that I can't remember how to pronounce, much less spell...and then headed back for some more shootin' time.
After awhile, the range officer came down the line to us and told us as long as we all made the range cold when we picked up brass or set new targets, we were free to police ourselves without his call. Jay said that rarely ever happens and to take it as a compliment. Nice.

All in all, it was an excellent day, even if I couldn't feel my fingers after awhile...and I must give props to Jay's friend, Dale, who let me shoot his FNH. Never shot one of those before. That was really nice of him.

I hope the nephew enjoyed the gun smorgasbord...he did really well.
Next up: the gun show this weekend! Woot!

Gun show, wooooot indeed! In Indiana, can you buy a handgun at a gun show and take it home? Here in Wisco we have that stooopid 48 hour "cooling off" period, which makes it very difficult to buy a handgun at a show since the dealers sometimes live several hours away.

Dan,
You absolutely take home whatever you buy. One, five, twenty...however many you can carry.
You just have to do the 4473 form if you're buying from a vendor/dealer.

If it's a private face-to-face deal, it's up to both parties to make sure that each of you is legally able to buy/sell.

Usually, people ask to see your Indiana permit, because you have to have one to legally transport anyway. No permit, no deal. Plus, the permit means you've already passed all the required background checks.

If the name on your permit matches your driver's license and the picture on your DL matches your face, I'll sell you whatever I'm looking to sell or trade.
As would most people.

Some choose to do a handwritten bill of sale. Some don't.
It's a mutual agreement of whatever both parties decide.

P.S.
Other state's permits = no deal. It's not legal to sell to non residents without an FFL dealer intervening.

You are lucky! MAN I wish I could go to a gun show and bring home a handgun.
