On one of the sites I frequent, there’s a question about which semi auto firearms are easy (or not) to field strip and reassemble. I think the Smith & Wesson 22A is about the easiest I own.
With the Kimber 1911, you need a little take down tool. If it moves out of place, it’s “buh bye spring”. Pain in the butt.
With the Kahr PM9, you have to be EXACT with lining up these teensy little markers to slide the cover off and start the take down. Most times my hands are grungy/oily and that is hard to do when your grip has slip.
The 22A has more pieces, but in my opinion easier because it’s like an elementary school puzzle. There’s only one way things fit and it’s clear by looking at them what order you have to do it in.
I decided to make a video of it and write up what goes on (except for cleaning it).
John Mellencamp helped me with musical interlude.
For the field strip:
Take out the mag.
Lock back the slide.
(These steps insure your firearm is not loaded).
Push the take down button in the front.
Take the barrel off.
Mind the spring while you release the slide stop.
Take the guide rod with spacer and spring out of the slide.
That’s it.
For the reassemble:
Make sure the spacer is on the rod (it’s so forgiving it can go on backwards).
Put the spring on the rod.
Place the slide back on the frame.
Guide the spring into the hole in the recoil housing.
Press it all down snapping the spacer in, too (keep a finger over it all to prevent a sproing of the spring :p )
Lock the slide back.
Line up the barrel on top of the frame and hook the rear of it into place while pressing the take down button and dropping the barrel stud into the hole in the frame for it.
When it’s fully seated, release the button.
Release the slide stop.
Insert the mag.
That’s it. If I can do it, then anyone can!

The Famous hand model in action at last. You done good! Might have to swing by the shop and try my hand at a S&W at the counter .
fwiw the HK USP 45 Compact I used to own was very easy to take down and reassemble, and so is my Beretta 92fs. Both take about 20 seconds to pull apart, no tools required. My Ruger Mark 3 is not as easy to take down and embarassingly difficult to reassemble if you don't know what you are doing. The instructions are actually helpful in the reassembly, but it should be easier. It is pretty funny, you can check them out online. I wonder if a Mark 2 is that difficult to reassemble - I will find out soon enough hopefully...
Good instructions and video.
