Beginning this month, the more than 12 million residents of the Chinese city Shenzen will be required to carry identity cards fitted with powerful computer chips including not only their names and address, as with previous identity cards, but also data on their work history, education, religion, ethnicity, police record and even personal reproductive medical history.

Whoa! Back the truck up… What? Computer chip IDs? Personal reproductive medical history?

China Public Security Technology is providing the chips with money from American companies including Roth Capital Partners and Oppenheimer & Co., and boasted to the Times of working relationships with several large computer companies.

Um…Several large computer companies? Like who?

American companies such as Cisco Systems, Yahoo and Google have already run into public relations trouble over their perceived role in aiding Chinese security forces to clampdown on dissent.

Boy that “War on Terror” spiel sure gets a lot done in its name. From violating Civil Rights to not allowing dangerous plastic silverware on commercial flights.
